About Nia

Every Body Welcome!!!


The Nia Technique was created in 1983 by Debbie Rosas and Carlos AyaRosas and it stands for Neuromuscular Integrative Action.

After being in the fitness field for years teaching traditional aerobics classes, they started to feel that there was something more to be created that could be gentler but still serve the body and at the same time, feed the soul. They decided to take their shoes off and learn how to listen to the body to go with it, instead of pushing against it! From "No pain, no gain" they went to "No pain, all gain!"

Nia became more than just a workout; it became a lifestyle practice of self-expression, which combined three different kinds of:

-Martial arts- Tai Chi (the slow dance), Tae Kwon Do (the dance of precision) and Aikido (the dance of harmonious spherical motion);

-Dance arts- Jazz (fun, expression), Modern Dance (shapes in space) and Duncan (free-spirited honest movement)

- Healing arts- Feldenkrais (conscious awareness of sensations), Yoga (conscious alignment of bones and joints) and Alexander technique (movement from the top).

...To create a sense of well-being in all aspects of ourselves: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Nia focuses on 13 theoretical and somatic principles & 52 moves that integrate the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities, offering each person the power of choice and self-direction towards pleasure and away from pain.

It is an inclusive workout that meets you where you are. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities by choosing from three intensity levels. Women who are going through a healthy pregnancy can safely take a Nia class. It is recommended to speak with the doctor first.
